The rosary is one of the most beloved and recognizable symbols of Catholic prayer and

What is the Rosary?

spiritual growth. At its core, the rosary is a set of prayers that focuses on the life of Jesus Christ
and the intercession of his mother, Mary. Each bead or knot on the rosary represents a prayer,
such as the Our Father, Hail Mary, or Glory Be.
The rosary is traditionally divided into five decades, each focusing on mysteries that reflect
events from the lives of Jesus and Mary. These mysteries are grouped into four categories:
Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous. When we pray the rosary, we reflect deeply on these
mysteries while inviting Mary to intercede for us as we grow closer to Christ.
 

The Origins of the Rosary
It’s a common misconception that St. Dominic, the founder of the Dominicans, originated the
rosary. While St. Dominic played a significant role in promoting the rosary, certain elements of
this prayer tradition existed long before him, while others evolved after his time.
Centuries before St. Dominic, monks had already established the practice of reciting all 150
psalms as part of their daily prayers. However, not all members of the monastic community
were literate. Lay brothers, or conversi, couldn’t read the psalms, so they were offered a simpler
and easily remembered alternative.
This simplified prayer involved reciting the Our Father 50 or 100 times. To help keep track, they
began using strings of beads, which were originally known as "Paternosters" (Latin for "Our
Fathers").

During the 12th century, the prayer evolved further. The Hail Mary began replacing the Our
Father as the main prayer associated with the rosary. At the time, only the first half of the Hail
Mary (the angel Gabriel's address to Mary) was recited; the second half was added later. Over
time, meditating on events in the life of Christ (the mysteries) became central to the practice of
praying the rosary.
Today, both Catholics and non-Catholics alike are drawn to the rosary for its ability to bring
profound clarity, comfort, and connection to God.
